In order to achieve this, ROTEX 1870 organizes a weekend reunion every 2 months for inbounds and outbounds. The frequent contact to the foreign exchange students is important because it gives them the opportunity to have a confidant for a personal conversation, as well as allows oneself to become more involved in their lives. An important requirement for the good communication between the inbounds and the rotex is the small, yet definite, age difference.

It is also important that the inbounds are given abundant free time during the reunions to share their stories with each other. They experience an incredible amount in their first two months, and from past experience we can attest that one wants to speak with those going through the same thing.

Homesickness is often triggered by speaking in one´s native language and, consequentially, the increased ability to express humor and emotions. For almost all incoming students, learning the German language is a difficult task, and therefore, it is a great relief to be able to easily communicate amongst themselves, or with the Rotex who learned their language.

The main purpose of the first reunion is not only to introduce the inbounds to the the rules and the expectations of behavior, but also for everyone to get to know each other. These goals are achieved through an easy going yet interesting program in a relaxed and playful atmosphere. The following reunion should be more focused on showing local points of interest and giving the inbounds the opportunity to speak openly about further experiences. Since every weekend reunion occurs in a different city of the district and has different program objectives, each one is unique and entertaining within a cultural context.

Examples of trips are visitng the Gasometer Museum in Oberhause, the Open Air Museum Mühlenhof, or the historical city center of Münster, the city of the Peace of Westfalia. Sport tournaments, ice-skating, and going clubbing wrap up the excursions. A new idea still in its planning phase, is to offer a city tour of a city outside of the district such as Weimar, Nürnberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Lübeck, Potsdam, etc. over and extended weekend. This tour would be in the second half of the exchange year.
